The Return Of The Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series
The return of the turf season at Doncaster, also means the return of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series, supported by White Rose Saddlery and continuing recent tradition, the race divided at declarations stage.
Nineteen went to post for division one, which was run over 1m2f on ground that was officially described as Good to Soft.
As the gates opened, Book Of Life, ridden by Ryan Kavanagh was quickly into the lead with Freddy Robinson under Shay Farmer hugging the rail in second and the rest of the field jostling to find their positions. Aim For The Moon was very slowly away and gave the rest several lengths at the start.
As they approached the bend, Book Of Life remained in the lead but Stoic Syd, ridden by 2023 series winner Elle-May Croot, joined him. Waistcoat under Morgan Cole, pulled his way into the lead and by now, a good two furlongs into the race, the field had start to string out. Further back there was drama as Monteria and Sam Feilden, who were positioned on the rail, stumbled and parted company.
Completing the home bend, runners tracked across to the stands side, with Waistcoat still taking them along, followed by Stoic City and Book Of Life.
Several of the jockeys started to ask their mounts for a bit more effort at this point, including Warren Fentiman, who was aboard Life On The Rocks and Shay Farmer and Freddy Robinson. The front runners started to retreat and Quick Away under Jack Nicholls was ridden to the fore, but with a furlong left to go, Mason Paetel brought Destinado through to challenge.
That made three in a row, Destinado, Life on the Rocks and Annexation who was ridden by Molly Gunn. Destinado managed to put his head in front and ran on to the line, an easy winner from Life On The Rocks who finished a length and three quarters in second, just ahead of the fast finishing Freddy Robinson, who was beaten a nose.
Division Two took place 35 minutes later and as the stalls opened, The Ganges reared up, while Chillhi who is in the neighbouring stall was slowly away, leaving these two to catch up with the rest of the runners. Ryan Kavanagh pushed Distinction to the head of affairs who was running on the outside of Sisterandbrother under Tom Kiely-Marshall.
Going into the bend, Run Of Luck and Liam Wright made progress on the outside, quickly going into the lead. Distinction sat in second and Powerful Response and Jack Callan sat on their quarters. Rounding the turn, Straya made a move up the outside, with Right Now sitting in behind and Powerful Response was shuffled back to sixth.
With three furlongs to go, the riders once again tracked over the stands side and Phone Tag under Jack Nicholls was asked for an effort. Liam Wright and Ryan Kavanagh also started to get busier on their mounts, with Distinction just nosing into the lead.
In the final furlong, Run Of Luck began to assert and Letmeseethecolts, ridden by Archie Young came out of the pack with a late run to challenge. Run Of Luck held on by a length at the line, with Letmseethecolts finishing a short head in front of Distinction.
With a win and a fourth place in the first two races, Mason Paetel goes into a clear lead with 21 pointes and Liam Wright in second, with 18 points.
The next race in the series takes place at Ripon on Thursday 17th April.
