Yorkshire’s racing community is celebrating outstanding success after three local stars from Middleham were honoured at the prestigious Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, sponsored by Godolphin. These awards celebrate the dedication, passion, and excellence that make the British thoroughbred sector thrive.

Freddie Wilks, an 18-year-old who works for Charlie Johnston, took home the Newcomer Award. This accolade recognises individuals who make a remarkable impact early in their career. Since joining the industry, Freddie has shown commitment, a strong work ethic, and a natural talent for working with thoroughbreds. The judges were impressed by his enthusiasm, quick growth, and the positive influence he’s already had in the workplace.
Charlie said,
“We are all very proud of Freddie, he is a great example of what a young person can achieve in a short space of time. He has progressed a lot from being a racing school graduate to being a really integral part of the team in the space of little over a year and is a very deserving winner of the award. He has been recognised for having a desire, passion and attitude that has allowed him to push himself and progress and we look forward to watching him progress still further.
The awards themselves are a great recognition of Stable Staff and all the hard work they do and it is an excellent initiative we have supported since its inception and will continue to do so.”

Yorkshire was also represented by Hayley Clements, who received the Community Award for her outstanding contributions beyond her daily responsibilities. A member of the Micky Hammond team, Hayley also runs Middleham Racing Tours. She has gone above and beyond to support her colleagues, promote the industry locally, and strengthen ties between racing and the wider community. Her dedication to inclusion and outreach initiatives has made a lasting impact both in her workplace and throughout the region.
When asked about her award, Hayley said,
“I was shocked! My first thought was, ‘I don’t want to have to speak on stage!’”
She takes great pride in her role as “Mrs. Middleham” and loves that her tours have brought people to the town.
“It’s been successful in that we’ve even hired a staff member from it, and two girls who came on recent tours have joined the National Horseracing College.”
Hayley’s next venture is to visit the local primary school and inspire children by sharing insights into career opportunities in the industry.
Adding to Yorkshire’s accolades, Kieran Kourdache, travelling head lad for Karl Burke, won the Rider/Racing Groom Award and was also named Employee of the Year. Kieran’s exceptional horsemanship, professionalism, and commitment to the highest standards of horse care and teamwork set him apart. The judges highlighted his consistency, skill, and dedication, making him a deserving recipient of the event’s top honour.
Kieran expressed his surprise at winning, especially after meeting the other finalists.
“Winning the overall award is fantastic for the yard. It’s great to see the staff and our horses recognised,” he said.
Having recently travelled outside of Europe for the first time, taking Holloway Boy and Lethal Levi to race in Qatar, Kieran dreams of taking horses to Australia next.
