Warrior Gently Battles On

Eight days after the previous series race, the apprentices lined up again at Catterick for October’s second Go Racing in Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series race, supported by White Rose Saddlery.

10 horses went to post one of the longer races in the series, which took place over 1m6f on ground that was officially good.

Last year’s winner, Bollin Neil, ridden by Jake Dickson and Captain Cairney under Harry Vigors made their way to the head of the field to share the early lead.  Stitching Wheel and Dragonflame raced behind in third and fourth, with Gentle Warrior, the favourite, just behind.  About six lengths covered the whole field from first to last.

Captain Cairney established a clear lead as they passed the winning post for the first time and as the pace increased slightly, the runners started to string out a little more.

At the half-way point, the field largely remained in the same order with Captain Cairney at the head of affairs and Arrange, ridden by Lauren Young, whipping them in at the back.

Approaching the final bend, the riders were starting to get busy in the saddle.  Captain Cairney looked to be going easily and Stitching Wheel was ridden to keep tabs on him.  Bollin Neil started to move backwards through the field and at the two furlong pole, Arrange was angled out for run.

Jack Nicholls got to work on Gentle Warrior and was helped by the fast finishing Arrange who loomed upsides him.

In a very tight finish, they managed to reel in Captain Cairney and the results of the photo finish showed that Gentle Warrior and Jack Nicholls got up to win by a short head from Arrange and Lauren Young, with Captain Cairney a neck back in third for Harry Vigors.

This win moved Jack up the leaderboard to fourth place but Conor Whiteley remains in top place with 48 points.

The final race in the series takes place at Doncaster on Saturday 7th November, the final day of the flat turf season.
