As the flat season continues to wind down, Pontefract stage their penultimate meeting of the season on Monday 5th October. The 15th race meeting of the year at the West Yorkshire venue is bound to be well supported as trainers get one last run in to their charges before the National Hunt season takes over.
It’s a fascinating card with the feature being ‘The £40 totepool Package on 19th October Handicap’ over 1 mile. The £15,000 prize money is bound to attract some interesting types. Indeed, the 2014 race saw Marco Botti send out the ultra smart Moohaarib to win. After a highly promising 3rd in the Lincoln this year, this horse has kept Group company during the rest of the season and the 2015 winner will need to be pretty smart to match his predecessor. The race title highlights the VIP package currently available to racegoers at the last meeting of the year.
Whilst it is not one of the more valuable races on the card, The Bluff Cove Handicap will certainly be one of the most fiercely contested as it makes up the penultimate leg of the Stayers Championship at the course in 2015. The ‘Championship’ looks like going to the wire with current leader, Tuscan Gold, and 2nd placed, Riptide, both intended runners for the final two legs. With recent impressive course winners Call It On and Aviator also in the mix, it looks like being an exciting climax to the series.
Two maiden races bookend the card and both have produced potentially smart winners in the past. Godolphin have sent out the last 3 winners of the opening Racing Uk Sky Channel 432 EBF Maiden. The 1m2f race is one of the longest races for 2 year olds in the calendar and Restraint of Trade, Dullingham and Oceanographer have all posted wins for the ‘boys in blue’. John Gosden sent out the winner of the closing maiden last year as Dubai Star sluiced through the rain softened ground to scoot clear by an impressive 6 lengths.
In conjunction with Racing UK, Pontefract are offering all subscribers to the channel the chance to come to this meeting for just £10. Anyone wishing to take advantage of the discount (which also applies to a guest of the subscriber) will need to bring their 2015 metal badge to the turnstile on the day. There’s also discounted entry to the Park Suite Restaurant for subscribers (subject to availability). Anyone wishing to take advantage of these offers should call the Racecourse Office with their Racing UK membership details.

The Racecourse continues to run the Yorkshire Postcode Lottery. The scheme gives racegoers from Yorkshire the chance to come racing in the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure for just £2. The last two meetings of the season are both part of the promotion, and punters with postcodes from Huddersfield and Bradford will be eligible for cheap entry at forthcoming meetings with Huddersfield postcodes the lucky ones on the 5th October. The action gets underway at 2.00pm with gates opening at midday.
