Rathbone Heading For Goodwood

It’s an exciting week for Oisin as he makes his debut at Glorious Goodwood.  Partnering Rathbone on whom he won the Scottish Stewards Cup at Hamilton recently, the pair will be joining forces again for the Stewards Cup at Goodwood.

“He’s been good to me, I’ve won on him before and he loves the big handicaps.  Obviously my claim helps in these races and I can’t wait to walk the course and ride at the famous Sussex track.”

While there’s a lot to look forward to Oisin is a bit quieter than he would like to be.

“There’s so much racing at the moment that the fields are really small which reduces the opportunity for apprentices like myself.”

That said, the rides Oisin has had for his boss Kevin Ryan have been quality, in the last fortnight everything he has ridden has either won or come second.

“It was great to have a few rides at the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival sponsored by Sky Bet last week.  There was a real buzz in the crowd, particularly at Ripon, the branding looked great and it was fun to get involved with the Paddock and Chips competition.”

“I’m not great at football, I played a bit at school but haven’t done for a long time so when I scored five points in the practice I thought I was in, but missed it in the competition.  I was one of only four jockeys to score points on the first day though but sadly couldn’t follow up later in the week.”

With a quiet book of rides this week Oisin is hitting the gym ahead of his trip to Goodwood at the weekend.  He has just started to read Richard Hughes’ autobiography, ‘A Weight Off My Mind’.  He also managed a trip to Edinburgh after racing at Newcastle last week to visit his brother who is studying a masters at the university and will be heading back to Ireland shortly.

We hope to see Oisin in the next round of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series at Thirsk on Friday 5th August.  It’s a six furlong race so fingers crossed Kevin will have something for him to ride at his local track, but before then all eyes will be on the 3.20pm at Goodwood.
