Juan Les Pins wins at Thirsk under Mason Paetel

We caught up with Mason on a recent overnight trip to Yorkshire where he was riding at both Beverley and Ripon and managed to fit in a morning at David O’Meara’s in between.

Since his return from America at the start of the year, Mason has been ticking over on the all-weather, carefully preserving his 5lb claim for the return of the flat season.

“I enjoyed America and learned a lot.  It’s very different riding abroad, everything is done to the clock and riding furlongs in a certain time, rather than distances.

“I hope to go back there again in the winter, when I can put this new skill back into use.”

With an impressive strike rate of 13% for the year so far and the return of the turf, Mason is back up to full speed looking for rides and winners.

A recent visit to Thirsk, provided him with one such victory on Juan Les Pins, for Mick Appleby.  A quick look on the Racing Post website, shows that the rider is engaged well in advance of declaration times, a clear sign that this talented young jockey is in high demand.

Now that he is back racing most days and riding out every morning, the days are pretty full, but he still finds time to visit the gym and has regular conversations with his jockey coach, Michael Hills, in a constant effort to keep improving.

Apprenticed to James Owen, there is a lot to look forward to.

“We’ve got plenty of nice horses in, including a lot of two-year-olds and I’m looking forward to them getting on course.”

“At the moment I’m just looking forward to the summer with an aim to keep busy.  I find the winter very miserable.”

As well as James Owen, Mason has been riding out for Ed Dunlop, Mick Appleby and Dylan Cunha and all have been supporting him with rides, as well as a few additional trainers booking him in the days to come.

With the race for the apprentice title still to start it’s sure to be something on the mind of every young rider and we wish Mason all the best in a bid to make a big impact.
