Autumn Update

As you would expect with a packed racing calendar, Oisin’s days seem to roll into each other, including weekends.  Working at Kevin Ryan’s there are a yard full of horses that need looking after daily and Oisin is an integral part of this team, before heading off to the races.

The Ryan yard share the load so all the staff work the mornings and the afternoon’s are covered by half of the staff on a weekly basis.  Oisin works this around racing so if he hasn’t got a ride in the afternoon, or it’s an evening meeting, he’ll work his afternoon feed shift during his week ‘on’ or spend the time at the gym or out running on his week ‘off’.

Recently Oisin was picked to represent Yorkshire in the recent Racing League.  The series ran over a series of Thursday evenings at ARC racecourses, both on turf and the all weather with a squad of seven jockeys and 15 trainers in each team providing the competitive action.  Team captain Leonna Mayor was in charge of recruitment and placing the horses with the trainers and with over £2m of prize money it was a big competition to take part in.

After a strong start, team Yorkshire’s efforts sadly declined and the finished in the bottom half of the table, but Oisin said it was a great opportunity to make connections with trainers he hasn’t previously ridden for and is hoping to join the team again next year.

Last weekend was spent up in Ayr with rides in both the Silver and Gold Cup at the Western meeting.

“I was really pleased with how Admiral ran in the Ayr Gold Cup, we finished seventh, but he was only beaten about two and a half lengths in a really competitive, valuable handicap.”

Admiral D is trained by Richard Fahey and Oisin goes into the Malton yard to ride out on his Sundays off, which has earned him plenty of rides to date.

After a winner on Arnold, trained by Ann Duffield, at Pontefract on Thursday, September 22, Oisin only needs 6 more wins to lose his 5lb claim and is hoping to add to the tally at the weekend.  With two good rides on Friday, plus recent York winner, Catch Cunningham at Ripon on Saturday there are some good chances coming up.

Oisin currently sits second in the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Handicap Series, behind his friend and rival Ryan Sexton.

“We’re fairly close on the number of winners we’ve ridden throughout the season and we’re both keen to win the series so the last couple of races will be very competitive!”  Said Oisin.

The leading contenders live only about 15 minutes away from each other in their home county of Kildare but it wasn’t until they both arrived in Yorkshire last year that they actually got to know each other!

As the turf season starts to draw to a close and several of the Yorkshire courses are holding their final meetings we look forward to watching Oisin mix the grass and the all-weather as we head into Autumn.
