Stable Tour with Karen Tutty

Name: Karen Tutty

Training Location: Osmotherley, Northallerton

Single/dual license?: Flat Licence

How long have you held a license? Since 2011

Training Facilities, including how many in the team: Two members of staff, professional flat jockey/assistant trainer my daughter – Gemma Tutty. Also, Charlotte Revell who has her own point to pointer which she rides and trains, and has taken part in a couple of charity races.

Number of horses in training/capacity: We have 22 boxes, but usually have around a dozen horses in training.

What is your background/introduction to racing? I rode in point to points

I had a point to pointer when I was 17 years old and trained them ever since, before edging more towards the flat horses since 2015.

Favourite horses either currently in training, you’ve previously trained or seen in your lifetime:

Talent Scout is a yard favourite, he is now 14 years old and lives here in his retirement. He is best remembered for his love of Beverley Racecourse, where he won 6 races for us, including 4 in his 11 year old season.  We was a real joy to train, and wore his heart on his sleeve. Gemma won 10 races on him in his career, so he is also particularly special to her.

Which jockeys do you regularly use?

My daughter Gemma, who claims 3lb.  I also use Shane Gray, Rowan Scott and Phil Dennis.

Three horses to follow this season and why?  Ideal Candy who has finally come down the handicap and should be able to win off her current mark.

  1. Which courses will suit (preferably Yorkshire!) – Our horses seem to all run well at Beverley, my be because it is a stiff hill resembling our gallop at home?
  2. Preferred distance – 7f – 8f Most of our horses seem to want this trip.
  3. Grade 5 & 6 Would like some higher grade horses but they are expensive to buy!

Favourite Yorkshire course and why

Beverley, as it is our most successful. We had a double there last season, and always have winners there each year. The horses just really seem to enjoy the stiff finish. I also think they do a great job with the variety of racedays and special events they plan there, such as the Bark De Triumph (jockey’s dog race) and the donkey derby.

Anything else of note

Our first ever two year old runner, back in 2013 was at Thirsk Racecourse on a beautiful sunny evening. There was a bad accident on the A1 causing havoc with travel, and the commentator hadn’t arrived in time for the first race, so RTV presenter Niall Hannity stepped in to call them home. Our chestnut filly ‘Announcement’ won it at 40/1 by ¾ length under Barry McHugh
