Round Two of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series, supported by White Rose Saddlery took place at Ripon’s opening fixture on Thursday, April 16.
It was a beautiful day, though slightly breezy and the ground was officially described as good to soft for the 1 mile contest.
There were 10 declarations for the race, but unfortunately two were withdrawn after getting upset in the stalls.
Course specialist, Garden Oasis, got an excellent jump at the start under Shay Farmer, from his wide outside draw, with Good Morning Alex and Rhys Elliott, who had ridden a double earlier in the day, in a prominent position on the rails. Owen Lewis slotted Chesneys Charm between the pair and there was a good early pace.
Going into the bend, Good Morning Alex took the lead with On The River and Harry Vigors tucked in behind and Milteye, partnered by Ethan Tindall following his stable mate. Chesney’s Charm remained to the fore on the outside and Garden Oasis dropped back a couple of lengths behind Barley and Tom Kiely-Marshall.
The field were closely packed together and Garden Oasis got a little nudge with just over half a mile to go.
By the two furlong pole, On The River had joined Good Morning Alex, who still had the rail and Milteye who had had to sit and be patient, waiting for a gap started to make headway. On The River stated to make headway but as Milteye switched and was allowed a run, he began to reel in his stablemate and just stretched his neck out on the line to win by a head from On The River. This was a great 1-2 for the Harriet Bethell stable and also the second leg of a quickfire double for the East Yorkshire trainer.
Walsingham, ridden by Conor Whiteley came with a late run from last to finish third. Having won the first race at Doncaster, the third placing was enough to give Connor a clear lead at the top of the table with 24 points. Ethan Tindall now sits in second with 20 points and Owen Lewis close behind in third with 19 points.
The next round takes place at Wetherby on Monday 15th June. Book tickets here.
