Ralph Roars Home
Wetherby hosted the latest round of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Series, supported by White Rose Saddlery, on the final day of their flat season.
Seven went to post on good to firm ground for the mile contest and after a level break, Popeye Doyle in first time blinkers took the lead on the rail, under Shay Farmer, with Garden Oasis and Jake Dickson keeping him company upsides.
Garden Oasis then came across to make the running and about nine lengths covered the field from start to finish as they went into the bend.
Garden Oasis and Popeye Doyle remained at the front, with Sunny Orange, partnered by Cian Horgan and Flying Fletcher under Tom Kiely-Marshall up close in third and fourth respectively.
As the runners came out of the bend and into the cutaway, they started to spread across the track and the riders began to niggle for a home run.
Approaching the three-furlong marker, Popeye Doyle was running along nicely in between Garden Oasis and Sunny Orange. Roaring Ralph was driven on by Rhys Elliott and by the two furlong pole he was really starting to gather momentum.
Inside the final half furlong, Roaring Ralph asserted and went on to win by a cosy length and a half from Popeye Doyle in second and Flying Fletcher a short head back in third. This was Roaring Ralph’s fifth win from six starts!
Roaring Ralph’s win took Rhys to joint second in the overall table with 20 points, sharing the spoils with Ethan Tindall. Although he didn’t have a ride in the Wetherby race, Connor Whiteley remains at the top of the leaderboard with 24 points.
There’s not long until the next race in the series which takes place at Beverley on Tuesday, June 23.
